Oliver started shooting black & white photography in his teens then moved to short and experimental films at university. He was the cinematographer on ‘Liu Awaiting Spring’ in 1999, a short film that screened at 50 festivals around the world, winning an award at the Berlin International Film Festival and receiving 2 Australian Film Industry AFI nominations. This film secured a place in the MA course at the Australian Film Television & Radio School (AFTRS). Graduating in 2002 with the National Student Cinematographer Award of the Australian Cinematographer’s Society (ACS).

 

Oliver works on numerous TV commercials, music videos, documentary films and feature films (including the MTV drama ‘Dream Life”, and the low budget dogma-style film ‘The Finished People’ that screened at the Montreal International Film Festival and was nominated for 2 AFI awards, and more recently ‘Finding Her’). His work has screened at international film festivals such as Venice, Berlin, Montreal, Edinburgh, Palm Springs, Toronto & at Camerimage in Poland. In 2003 Oliver won the Best Cinematographer Award at the St Kilda International Film Festival for the film ‘Lightness’, and in 2006 he won the Kodak Gong Award for Best young cinematographer in Australasia. In 2009 he co-founded a production company, Photoplay.
